Site Review: Mayflower History

Site URL: MayflowerHistory.com

Content:  This site brings together genealogy and history, providing detailed information on the history, passengers and documents associated with the Mayflower and its famous voyage.

Design:  Mayflower History boasts that it has been around since the 1990s Internet heyday, and the site’s appearance reflects its age. Lacking any flair to attract users, each page features a clumsy main graphic and drab color scheme.

Aesthetics aside, the site functions well, with working links and expertly cited content. The primary navigation appears in a very handy location along the left side of the screen. Users can easily bounce to a different section of the site without having to scroll all the way back to the top of a given page.

Mayflower HistoryReview:  The brainchild of author and historian Caleb Johnson, Mayflower History has expanded greatly over the years, along with Johnson’s research. It now boasts a trove of historical information including detailed histories of the ship, its voyage and Plymouth Colony.

Teachers will not find any classroom materials here along the lines of lesson plans or printables. But make no mistake—the information here is as solid as Plymouth Rock, covering nearly every aspect of the Mayflower voyage and the early years of Plymouth Colony. Educators will find plenty with which to craft their own materials.

If you’re looking to create a particularly detailed lesson about this subject, Mayflower History provides an impressive research library of links to other sources for Mayflower-specific information. Visitors will be hard pressed to leave this site wanting for information regarding this historic event.

Bottom Line:  Mayflower History has all the historical bases covered, making it very useful in the classroom.
