Site Review: Kids.Gov

Site URL: Kids.Gov

Content:  This catch-all site provided by the U.S. government offers students practical and educational information and resources.

Design:  Kids.gov uses a simple design template across all of its pages, with various links falling below a primary content area at the top. Because several of the site’s areas are meant for student use, the links and icons on these pages are large and self-explanatory.

The navigations are all clear and work properly, although because some links to outside sites do not open in a new window or tab, it makes sense to keep an eye on your browser.

Kids.govReview:  Kids.gov has a dedicated area for each of three specific audiences: Grades K-5, Grades 6-8 and Educators. Each audience tab is divided into educational subjects such as Arts, Math and History.

Within each subject, the Web sites are grouped as either government sites (federal, state, military) or other resources (commercial, non-profit, educational). The sites listed under the "other" resources category are maintained by other public and private organizations.

In this capacity, the site is very handy. For those who would rather not search the Internet endlessly for a classroom resource focused on algebra, a trip to Kids.gov will provide a list of several sites offering just that. Likewise, the site provides links to hundreds of sites dealing with countless academic disciplines.

In addition, Kids.Gov’s in-house materials—including videos, educational games and printables—are very good. While not a particularly deep or diverse site, Kids.gov is wonderful in a pinch, when educators need a resource quickly.

Bottom Line:  The limited in-house materials on the site are good, and the links to educational sites are great.
