Content:  Per the U.S. Government, the U.S. Geological Survey is “a science organization that provides impartial information on the health of our ecosystems and environment, the natural hazards that threaten us, the natural resources we rely on, the impacts of climate and land-use change, and the core science systems that help us provide timely, relevant and useable information.”

USGSDesign: The site is rather hard on the eyes—users will find a lot of white pages with dark text and too-small images—but that doesn’t detract from the incredible scientific resources here. In addition, the site functions well.

Review:  As the nation’s largest water, earth and biological science and civilian mapping agency, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) collects, monitors, analyzes and provides scientific understanding about natural resource conditions and problems.  The organization’s scientific expertise diversity enables it to carry out large-scale, multi-disciplinary investigations and provide detailed scientific information.

While most of us only think of the USGS when an earthquake hits, the group’s offerings are much more diverse. In addition to the standard geological information one would expect, educators also will find resources on climate change and precipitation, biodiversity and ecosystems, land use and pollution, glaciations and erosion, and more.

Bottom Line:  From geological data to in-depth, scientific analysis of ecosystems, the USGS has earth science covered.
