iPad App Review: Grammar Up

App Name: Grammar Up

Cost:  $4.99

What does it promise?  Grammar Up is a multiple-choice quiz system for English that provides over 1,800 questions across 20 grammar categories. It claims to help learners improve their grammar, word selection and vocabulary.

Does it deliver?  This is a very handy little app. It was designed to replicate questions with a business focus commonly found in the popular TOEIC English proficiency test, so students will become comfortable with the types of questions they’ll face during formal testing. Even if your district doesn’t use the TOEIC test, the questions are still useful in giving students a feel for these types of tests.

Research suggests that kids and adults learn most quickly when playing learning games with real-time error feedback, which Grammar Up provides.

The app also offers students practice tests so they can see how much they’ve learned. A summary is presented at the end of each test, showing time spent, score, and questions answered correctly and incorrectly. The results are also emailable.

A nice-looking progress meter lets students track their weak areas and focus on them.

The slick user interface allows students to choose from a variety of possible answers. There is no need to press too many buttons or encounter any alert messages, making for an enjoyable user experience.

Can I use it in my classroom?  This app can be used in the classroom as part of any grammar lesson, or at home as a supplement to classroom activities.

All apps can be found in the iPad apps store under education.
