Name: The 2009 Read With Kids Challenge

Who Can Participate: Participants can register individually or as a team of three or more adults.

Deadline: The Challenge runs from April 1 to June 30, 2009.

Description: The 2009 Read With Kids Challenge, co-sponsored by USAir and Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), has set a goal of collectively logging 5 million minutes of reading to kids from April 1 to June 30, 2009. To help reach that goal and to be in the running for a US Air vacation package to Disney World, adults should register individually or in teams at the Read With Kids Challenge site. Those who make a donation to RIF also will receive a special edition of the Off You Go, Maisy children's book by bestselling author/illustrator Lucy Cousins, and be eligible to receive up to 5,000 US Airways Dividend Miles. In addition to contest information, the Challenge site includes reading and writing activities, a Millions of Minutes Meter, an online community for participants, and more. Who Can Participate: The contest is open to all legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia, however Good Food Gardens will only be awarded to nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations, schools with a valid NCES code, or local government entities that serve children and youth.

Description: In partnership with Share Our Strength and Food Network, Reader's Digest and its sponsors are underwriting the creation of five new edible Good Food Gardens in schools and communities in the United States. To enter to win a Good Food Garden, participants must explain, in 500 words or less, why their school or community deserves a Good Food Garden and how an edible garden will further their school or community mission. Reader's Digest and Share Our Strength will select 8 finalists to post on the ReadersDigest.com Web site. Finalists will be selected by Reader's Digest and Share Our Strength based on the following criteria: 40 percent need; 20 percent how garden will be utilized; 20 percent lot/land feasibility; 20 percent collection and completion of outlined necessary paperwork.

Description: eInstruction and Knowledge Delivery Systems invite educators to describe what online resources they have used or would like to use that they believe would contribute to the success in their classroom. Working with students, teachers should come up with short written descriptions relating to online classroom resources and how they use them. Three grand prize winners will receive an interactive makeover worth over $4,300 for their classrooms.

Description: Digital Wish has teamed up with Inspiration Software, Inc. to bring educators a new grant contest. The Inspired Kids Contest, beginning April 15, asks educators to use Kidspiration software to reflect upon the year's events as a class and then to use Kidspiration to create a project or lesson plan idea that explores those events. The educator who submits the most inspiring lesson plan will win a 10-computer license of Kidspiration with accompanying school-wide lesson plan books, and a 10 megapixel digital camera. Three additional winners will each receive a single copy of Kidspiration with lesson plan books.

Name: Ypulse 2009Totally Wired Teacher Award

Who Can Participate: All nominations must be for grades 3-12 classroom teachers actively teaching in U.S. public schools. Teachers can nominate themselves.

Deadline: All nominations must be submitted by May 15, 3009.

Description: Sponsored by Dell, the Ypulse 2009 Totally Wired Teacher Award honors a public school teacher whos successfully using technology (the Internet/social media, mobile technology, gaming) in the classroom. The award, inspired by Ypulse founder Anastasia Goodstein's book, Totally Wired: What Teens & Tweens Are Really Doing Online, recognizes the challenges teachers face integrating technology into the classroom and honors a teacher who best overcomes those challenges. The selected teacher will be honored at the Ypulse Youth Marketing Mashup June 1-2, 2009, in San Francisco, California.

Name: Teachers Recess April Contest

Who Can Participate: Any educator is eligible to participate.

Deadline: The contest runs from March 27, 2009, to April 30, 2009.

Description: Teachers Recess is sponsoring a drawing to give away three $50 Gift Cards to Amazon.com. To qualify for the drawing, either 1) refer five teachers to Teachers Recess, or 2) upload five lesson plans to the Teachers Recess File Cabinet. Name: 2009 Adobe School Innovation Awards

Who Can Participate: High school students in grades 912 (ages 1419) in accredited private and public schools in the United States and Canada (except Quebec) are eligible to participate.

Deadline: The deadline for submissions is May 8, 2009.

Description: The stage is set for high school students who have unique stories to tell about their world. The 2009 Adobe School Innovation Awards will honor the most innovative print, web, and video projects created with Adobe software. Students can download free, fully functional trial versions of Adobe software products to create entries with the theme The World Is Your Stage. Entries can be submitted in three categories: Web Design and Development, Film and Video, and Graphic and Print Design. Category award winners as well as one grand prize winner for best overall submission will be chosen. Winners will be announced at the 2009 National Education Computing Conference in Washington D.C.

Name: The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes

Who Can Participate: Nominees may range in age from 8 to 18 years old.

Deadline: Nomination materials must be received by April 30, 2009.

Description:
The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes honors outstanding young leaders who have made a significant positive difference to people and our planet. Nominees must have been the prime mover of a service activity, and demonstrated positive spirit and high moral purpose in accomplishing their goals. Nominees must be nominated by responsible adults who have solid knowledge of the young person's heroic activities, and who are not related to the nominee. Each year, the Barron Prize selects ten winners nationwide. Half of the winners have focused on helping their communities and fellow beings; half have focused on protecting the health and sustainability of the environment. The goal of the Barron Prize is to celebrate such heroic young people and to inspire others to do their part. Winners of the Barron Prize each receive $2,500 to be applied to their higher education or to their service project, as well as a number of additional honors and awards.

Competition Name: Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching

Who Can Participate: Full-time U.S. mathematics and science teachers with at least five years teaching experience are eligible. In even-numbered years, the award is given to elementary grade teachers (grades K-6); in odd-numbered years, its awarded to secondary level teachers (grades 7-12).

Deadline: May 1, 2009

Description: Administered for the White House by the National Science Foundation, the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching recognize exemplary K-12 teachers for their contributions both in the classroom and to their profession. Teachers first must be nominated, then complete an application to be eligible for the award. The application includes a videotaped lesson and written responses to questions about the teacher's instructional practice. Presidential Award winners receive $10,000 from the National Science Foundation, as well as a weeklong trip for two to Washington, D.C.

Name: ThinkQuest Narrative Competition 2009

Who Can Participate: Teams compete in three age groups --19 and younger, 15 and younger, and 12 and younger. Each team must be composed of a coach (teacher) and 3-6 students.

Deadline: May 4, 2009

Description: Students/teacher teams choose a topic and create rich content using ThinkQuests online project tools. The competition

  • invites student teams to publish their ideas on issues of global importance;
  • requires student teams to collaborate using the ThinkQuest project space as their online publishing tool;
  • offers teachers an opportunity to embed an international competition on globally relevant topics into the classroom curriculum;
  • helps validate independent student work and provide learning outcomes;
  • fosters a powerful and engaging experience for students.

Name: Online Math League

Who Can Participate: Online Math League contests are open to school and homeschool teams and to individual students around the world. Grade-level specific contests are offered at 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade, and Algebra levels.

Deadline: The first contest may be taken anytime in November, the second contest may be taken anytime between January 15 and February 15, and the third contest may be taken anytime in March.

Description: Online Math League contests consist of three fun, challenging math contests spread throughout the school year. The tests are grade-level specific (second grade through Algebra), are aligned with state and national math standards, and offer problems of varying difficulty levels so students of all abilities are appropriately challenged. Each Online Math League contest consists of fifteen multiple-choice questions; students can take the tests online or as paper and pencil tests. The cost is $99 (US dollars) to register a grade-level team for the entire school year. For an individual child, the cost is $39.

Name: Teachers in Space

Who Can Participate: Any K-12 teacher in the United States is eligible to participate.

Deadline: Ongoing

Description: The nonprofit Teachers in Space program -- a project of the Space Frontier Foundation and the United States Rocket Academy -- has announced the start of a competition to select two teachers who will be the first astronauts to fly in space and return to teach in American classrooms. Those pathfinders astronauts will fly on flights donated to Teachers in Space by suborbital companies. They also will help develop training programs for the large numbers of teachers who follow. The program actually involves two competitions: The first competition will select a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) teacher; applicants will be asked to submit a proposal for an experiment that can be performed on a suborbital spaceflight. The second competition will select a K-12 teacher from any subject area; applicants will be asked to submit a lesson plan or educational module based on some aspect of human spaceflight. All submissions will be posted to a Wiki website where they will be available to the entire educational community.

Competition Name: USA Mathematical Talent Search

Who Can Participate: All U.S. middle and high school students are eligible to participate.

Deadline: Ongoing (New competitions are introduced four times a year.)

Description: The USA Mathematical Talent Search (USAMTS) is an individual mathematics competition held four times a year. Problems -- which range in difficulty from being within the reach of most high school students to challenging the best students in the nation -- are published on the contest Web site one month before solutions are due. Students may use any materials -- books, calculators, computers -- to solve the problems, but all work must be their own. Although prizes are awarded, the USAMTS is an individual challenge; its competitive role is secondary.
