Lesson Plan

Are you looking for an easy gift idea for kids to make for the December holidays? Mothers Day? Nothing could be easier than a microwaved 5-minute mug cake!

Have students bring in a favorite mug from home. Better yet, this might be the time you have kids create a beautiful original artwork mug.

Then figure the total ingredients you will need so each student can make a mug cake. The following ingredients are needed for a single cake:

  • 4 tablespoons cake flour (plain flour, not self-rising)
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons baking cocoa (cocoa powder)
  • 1 egg
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 3 tablespoons oil
  • 3 tablespoons chocolate chips (you can add more or less)
  • 1 dash vanilla

Choose one of these four recipes. They are all very similar:

Another Idea
Are you familiar with the Web site Artsonia? At Artsonia, you can upload students artwork and parents can access that artwork to make all kinds of nifty and practical products. Best of all, your school earns a percentage of the money that parents (and grandparents) spend at Artsonia.

Read an Education World article about teachers who are using Artsonia:
Artsonia: Online Gallery Raises Funds, Art Awareness, and Self-Esteem
At a time when money for the arts is limited and families may be spread across the globe due to military service, immigration, and other causes, one online resource seeks to support the connections of far-flung families and the bank accounts of local schools in one broad stroke. Artsonia is a masterpiece: a fundraiser for the arts and a free online gallery for student artwork in one inspired package. Included: Practical tips to help new users make the most of Artsonia.
