Great Sites For Teaching About: The Human Eye

Great Sites Center

Today, Education World celebrates Children's Eye Health and Safety Month (September) by highlighting some of the best sites "eye sites" on the Web!

September is Children's Eye Health and Safety Month, a good time for children -- and the adults who live and work with them -- to learn about or review vision and eye safety. Education World recommends the following sites:

  1. Eye Site
    http://library.thinkquest.org/J002330/
    This excellent Web site, a fourth-grade ThinkQuest project, is divided into five sections:
    • The Eye provides a very general overview;
    • Anatomy contains useful illustrations for an in-depth lesson;
    • Ailments, Symptoms, and Cures defines common diseases and abnormalities of the eye as well as treatments;
    • Games and Activities includes optical illusions and a quiz; and
    • Message Boards provides a place to share with others experiences with vision problems. This is a very easy to navigate, understandable site with a lot of solid information.

  2. BrainPOP Presents Vision
    http://www.brainpop.com/health/senses/vision/
    Did you know that your optic nerve is so long that, should your eyeball fall out of its socket, it would touch your chin? This colorful, fun page has many facts about the eye. A brief movie demonstrates how the eye works. After viewing that, visitors can take a quiz to see how much they've learned; do a vision experiment with Bob, the ex-lab rat; and label the parts of the eye on a printable activity page. This Web page is part of BrainPOP.com, a Web site with more than 80 original animated movies covering health, science, and technology topics.

  3. Safe Eyes Quiz
    http://www.optima-hyper.com/eyetests/kidsquiz/KIDSAFE.htm
    Have you ever noticed how many times your eyes blink? How far can an eagle see? For the answers to those and other vision-related questions, look at this kid-friendly Web page. The site presents eight brief quiz questions about eye safety, each with a printable coloring page to help reinforce the lesson. It also provides interesting facts about the eye.

  4. Sighting the First Sense: Seeing Is Believing
    http://library.thinkquest.org/C001464/cgi-bin/view.cgi
    This Web site is the result of a ThinkQuest project. The goal of the site is to provide a collection of sight-related information within a simple, fun, and interactive environment. Information in this easily navigable site includes the purpose and function of the eye, how light impacts perception, an overview of the significant events and people who shaped optical research, and more. The site includes several interactive areas as well, such as discussion forums, polls, and quizzes.

  5. Welcome to the American Optometric Association (AOA)!
    http://www.aoanet.org/
    For a very complete resource about the eye, check out this site. Clicking on The Education Center, then on Just for Kids! brings you to information on how the eye works, safety tips, an eye-care quiz, and optical illusions. The Teachers' Center contains activity sheets and classroom exercises.

  6. Children and Eye Problems
    http://www.preventblindness.org/
    children/index.html

    This easy-to-use Web site includes useful information about the prevention and identification of common injuries and diseases of the eye in children. Included are simple, do-it-yourself eye tests for children, warning signs of eye problems, and safety suggestions. Click on the Eye Patch Club to send away for a kit with information on amblyopia, or "lazy eye." Included in the kit is a classroom guide with information and suggestions for teachers. This Web site is maintained by Prevent Blindness America, the nation's leading volunteer eye health and safety organization dedicated to fighting blindness and saving sight.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES FOR TEACHING ABOUT EYES

  • EyeNet
