QUESTION 1

Textbook Free -- What if your school district decided to do away with textbooks, as some have? Do you think it would be a good or an unworkable idea?

A) Textbooks are an unnecessary constraint. Teachers would be more effective without them.

B) Textbooks are the foundation of the learning experience. Without them, lessons would be too chaotic and random. I think it's an unworkable idea.

C) If teachers were adequately prepared, and the curriculum were reorganized in a logical way, it could be an interesting experiment to try to go without textbooks temporarily.

D) I have no opinion on this issue.

QUESTION 2

Early Education -- Studies have shown that students who attended pre-school are more likely to complete high school. President Clinton, who has proposed that the Early Head Start program be available to even more children, would seem to agree. What do you think about making pre-school a part of the public school system?

A) I think it's a good idea to pull pre-school programs into the public schools; that way we can be sure the children are really learning, not just being babysat.

B) Even if children's early education has an impact on how they'll do later on as students, I don't think it's the place of public schools to encompass pre-school.

C) If there is a lack of educational and affordable pre-schools in the community, it might be a good idea for public schools to include pre-school-age programs.

D) I have no opinion on this issue.

QUESTION 3

Year-round school -- The concept of year-round school is considered by some to be a way to improve schools, but districts implementing year-round schedules have met with strong resistance. You think that year-round schooling:

A) Is a good idea because it can help alleviate overcrowding, keep costs down, and help students retain what they learn.

B) Is a bad idea, because it can create so many new problems with participation in intramural sports, college counseling, childcare during non-traditional vacation times, and even air-conditioning.

C) Can be a good idea in districts where it is actually necessary, if it is well-implemented, but all schools should not be year round.

D) I have no opinion on this issue.
