GRADE LEVEL: Professional Educator

CONTENT:
Coalition of Essential Schools is a growing network of more than 1,000 schools in 38 states that are implementing community-based school reform centered around rethinking the schools' priorities and redesigning curriculum, assessments, and instruction to be more student centered. The site offers a large library of materials, lists of participating schools, and information on projects and research.

AESTHETICS:
The site has a professional look. The low number of graphics makes it fast loading.

ORGANIZATION:
A comprehensive navigational bar is at the top of all pages. Each individual section has a navigational sidebar.

REVIEW:
Embracing a culture of inquiry, the Coalition of Essential Schools seeks to "re-form" schools and create learning communities where students learn through exploration and encouragement. The traditional teacher-as-lecturer role is shed and replaced with a guide who shows young people how to learn and then helps them find the answers on their own. This site is inspiring and well worth visiting. The list of schools actively involved in this process is impressive and extensive. Be sure to take a look at the site's Fieldbook for a list of articles, tools, and links on a comprehensive list of topics important to supporting the coalition's schools. The Projects/Research section has information on current professional development projects in the schools and includes toolboxes useful to all educators. Don't miss this one!
