Site Review: CNN.com

Site URL:  CNN.com

This is one in a series of site reviews that take a look at how major news Web sites can be used in the classroom. See also reviews of HuffingtonPost.comGoogleNews.com, AOL.com, MSN.com, MSNBC.com, FoxNews.com and Yahoo.com.

Content:  CNN has incredible original reporting resources, and CNN.com reflects that. CNN.com offers original reporting, stories pulled from the CNN channels and extra pieces that were produced, along with television packages that are exclusive to the site. In addition to its incredibly strong domestic content, CNN also has a deep roster of international reporters producing content for the site.

Design:  In some ways the design for CNN.com suggests the network's TV origin, since only one major and one lesser item are featured above the fold. Finding what you need – unless you are only interested in the two biggest stories of the day – requires significant scrolling. The section-front pages like “U.S.,” “World” and “Politics” are a little better; they at least start a list of top stories in a place where you can easily see it on most computers.

Review:  In many ways, CNN represents the gold standard for news gathering. As the Web arm of the far-reaching TV network, CNN.com has access to great content produced by professionals. The site does suffer a bit from poor design in that it prioritizes news for users, rather than letting them make their own choices. CNN.com does, however, offer a very comprehensive news report and is one of the best, if not the best, American site for reporting about the world.

Bottom Line:  CNN.com is a good choice for use in the classroom because all of its content comes from paid reporters working with top-notch editors. There's no content aggregating on this site, so you never have to worry about your students following a path to a less-than-credible source.
