ArtsAlive.ca: Music
A fun look at orchestral music, for teachers, parents, and kids.
Grade Level: 3-5, 6-8

http://www.artsalive.ca/en/mus/index.asp

CONTENT:
Arts Alive.ca was developed by the National Arts Centre of Canada and is a wonderful site for teachers, students, and parents. It introduces students to composers and the instruments of the orchestra in a way that is fun.
AESTHETICS:
This well designed site is cute and colorful with child friendly graphics. It is available in both English and French. Real Player, Macromedia Flash and QuickTime are needed to view the multimedia files.
ORGANIZATION:
The content is organized into six categories that are listed on the main page. Subsequent pages have a left side menu and there is a handy sitemap available in the bottom menu bar.

REVIEW:
This Web site is a great resource for teachers and students studying about instruments and composers. It includes Great Composers, where students can read and learn about various composers. From the music resources, teachers can download teaching guides about Mozart, Beethoven, Vivaldi and Schubert as well as biographical information and teaching activities on seven other composers. This section also includes sound files and video clips of orchestra performances and interviews with the musicians. In the Instrument Lab, students can learn about the different instrument families in the orchestra and view and listen to the virtual instruments. The NAC Orchestra and Friends section includes video interviews with the Orchestra Music Director and with orchestra members. The site also has many great activities and games to help students learn more about music.
