The world's largest museum complex provides resources for educators, kids, and families.
Grade Level: 3-5, 6-8

http://www.SmithsonianEducation.org

CONTENT:
The world's largest museum complex, The Smithsonian Institution, offers teachers, students, and families a wide array of quality teaching and learning materials.
AESTHETICS:
This well-designed site uses beautiful graphics and sophisticated colors to keep visitors coming back for more. Flash Player and Real Player are required for parts of the site.
ORGANIZATION:
The resources are grouped by audience type. Rolling the mouse over each link on the main page gives users a glimpse of what that section contains. Navigation through each section is intuitive and links to the other major sections are provided on each internal page.

REVIEW:
Smithsonian Education offers a wealth of high-quality K-12 lesson plans in areas such as art and design, science and technology, history and culture, and language arts. Each of the plans includes an overview, background information, activities, national standards, and resources. The database of lesson plans can be browsed by subject area or searched by keyword, grade level, and subject. Teachers will also want to visit the Resource Library, which can be searched by keyword, grade level, subject, museum, and state standard. Students will have a fun interactive learning experience in the IdeaLabs section, which includes topics such as "Walking on the Moon" and "Mr. President." Students will also want to browse the topics (listed in the left side menu) to discover exciting activities such as creating a sculpture and making a light bulb. There are enough resources here to keep kids engaged for hours. The section for families includes information on how to plan a museum visit and what to do before, during, and after the visit.
