What does it promise? The Embryo app is a Science app recommended by STEM Mobile Labs that promises to take students through the development stage of a real live human embryo. The National Library of Medicine and National Institute of Child Health and Human Development developed the images according to the app.

 

“The Embryo App uses mobile telecommunication and multimedia technologies to add interactive capabilities to the digital information, enhancing our understanding of embryo development,” according to the NLM.

 

“This App is part of the National Library of Medicine’s program to fulfill the NLM’s role as a provider of medical, science and health care information using mobile technologies.”

 

Does it deliver? Yes. The Embryo App does deliver as a tool to aid students in understanding the science and medicine behind the development of a human embryo. The videos and photos are very clear and forces students to analyze what is happening at every stage of development. Students are taken through fertilization, stages, after and the app even provides 3D animation. A list of related resources can be found in the easy to browse menu on the home screen. The app is well organized making it easy to browse through for students.

 

Can I use it in the classroom? Yes. The Embryo app can be used in classrooms teaching science and anatomy. The added STEM push makes this app perfect for use in today’s classroom and the photos and videos should help teachers relay their knowledge much easier. As study aids, the list of resources in the related resources area provides students with trustworthy and comprehensive research that can be used in reports assigned by educators. The app is pretty sophisticated in terms of information so while it’s rater ages 4 and up, it would better suit children in the late middle to high school levels of education.
