App Name: Codecademy: Code Hour

Cost: Free

What does it promise? Codecademy: Code Hour promises a way for students to learn the basic coding skills. Students can use their iPad or iPhone and learn how those devices work as well as create code that they can use on websites of their own or in class projects. It promises a way where students can learn some of the science behind the technology they use everyday.

Does it deliver? Yes. Codecademy: Code Hour does deliver in every sense of their promises. STEM education has seen an added push especially from President Barack Obama and his Education campaign. Students who explore STEM education subjects can be better versed in the technology present and future. Codecademy starts out with a simple code where the user inputs their name. The result is a message written by the user without them even knowing it. Not to worry the exercises are explored deeper so that students figure out the ins and outs of applications on their mobile devices and all computer-programmed devices as well. Learning to code is not easy but if students can get the base of this occupation at an early age it’s much more likely that they will be able to learn at a quicker pace.

Can I use it in the classroom? Teachers who plan on teaching computer science in their classrooms can use this app. It can be used as practice or a teaching agent that is overseen by the instructor. Students might also want to use this app as practice on their devices at home. Parents can rest assured that this would be a great way to get your child involved in STEM education.
