This site is designed for persons who are interested in educational changes taking place in rural America. The site provides access to recent data collected by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), as well as access to resources available through selected contractors and grantees of the U.S. Department of Education.

A product of the National Network of Regional Educational Laboratories, this web site is a collection of research and development resources for educators who work in rural settings. The resources include Web sites, publications, training programs, model programs, and services. Each list of resources is preceded by an overview that outlines the topic and tells why it is important to educators in rural areas.

The AEL Rural Specialty
The Appalachia Regional Educational Laboratory (AEL) is one of the nation's 10 regional educational laboratories funded by the U.S. Department of Education. AEL's specialty is Rural Education, with a guiding focus of fostering the essential relationship between rural schools and their communities. A century of progress has caused divisions between many rural schools and their communities. Work of the Specialty tries to bring schools and communities closer together by providing research and scholarly publications.

Economic Research Service
The Economic Research Service, a service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, provides economic analysis on efficiency, efficacy, and equity issues related to agriculture, food, the environment, and rural development to improve public and private decisionmaking. The materials presented here provide policymakers and others with information to better understand the health of the overall rural economy, the conditions and trends affecting rural people, communities, businesses, and industries, and the implications of alternative public policies and programs on rural people and places.

Founded as the Annenberg Rural Challenge in 1995, the Rural School and Community Trust is a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to enlarging student learning and improving community life by strengthening relationships between rural schools and communities and engaging students in community-based public work. Through advocacy, research, and publications, the Rural Trust strives to create a more favorable policy environment for rural community perspectives on schooling, for student work with a public audience and use, and for more active community participation in schooling.
