Deriving the Formula For the Area of a Circle

Grade: 6-8, 9-12

Brief Description

Students work individually or in groups to derive the formula for the area of a circle.

Objectives

Learners form a rectangle by partitioning a circle and relate A = bh to A = pr2.

Materials Needed

Provide one of the following for each individual or group:

  • one large, heavy paper or cardboard circle, about 12 inches in diameter
  • scissors
  • rulers
  • colored markers or crayons.
