A Digital Quilt

Subject: Visual Arts Ed. Technology
Grade: 3-5

Brief Description

In this activity, which correlates with the book The Patchwork Quilt by Valerie Flourney, students use digital technology to create squares for a class quilt.

Objectives

Students will be able to take pictures of other students, use software to download picture files, print pictures, decorate picture frames, and insert their pictures.

Materials Needed

Digital Camera and software, computer hook up, photo quality paper, construction paper in various colors, glue, glitter, crayons, ribbons, bows, etc.

Lesson Plan

  • Use a digital camera to take each student's picture.
  • Help students download their pictures to the computer. Print the pictures in a 5 x 7 size.
  • Have students create picture frames by cutting a 5x7 square from the construction paper, cutting the frame into the desired shape, and decorating it with glitter, paper, ribbons, and so on.
  • Combine the squares into a "quilt" on a classroom bulletin board.

Assessment

A discussion of the activity will assess the student understanding of the project. The actual quilt square will also be evidence.
