Can I Have Your Attention, Please?

Your attention please! It's hard enough to get students' attention during non-tech activities, but when computers are added to the mix, it's darn near impossible. Those mice, keyboards, and blinking monitors are much too tempting. The tricks below will help keep all eyes on you at least when you need to give directions.

Bring Up the Rear
Learn to lecture from the back of the room.

Teach technology lessons -- especially lessons in which students access the Internet -- from the back of the classroom. That way, you can monitor students and force them to turn away from their keyboards when you need to give directions.

Remove distractions.

When giving directions for a tech activity, hold students' attention by having them turn their mice upside down or put their hands on top of their heads.

Lights Out!
If they can't see the screen, they're less likely to be off task.

Have students turn off their monitors -- but not their computers -- when you want them to listen to directions.
