Tech in the Classroom:

Pocket Hound

What is it Pocket Hound is a handheld device that detects when unauthorized mobile phone use is occurring.

How does it work?  The receiver in the device continually scans all cell phone bands and using a sophisticated algorithm samples the Radio Frequency (RF) noise floor to distinguish real cellular activity from ambient RF noise.

pocket houndHow hard is it to use?  The Pocket Hound slips easily into a pocket or lies concealed in the palm, vibrating when unauthorized cell phone use is detected. It also has a row of blue LED lights that flash at the same time.

How well does it work?  Fairly well. There is a small learning curve for users, but once they master how to properly detect unauthorized mobile phone use, it really is as simple as turning it on and waiting.

How do I use it in the classroom?  Heavy mobile phone use by teens has led to a proliferation of mobile-phone enabled cheating. The Pocket Hound alerts teachers to unauthorized mobile phone use, thwarting any student attempts to cheat in this way.
