Cool Math Sites for Kids

Do your students complain that math is "boring" or "too hard?" Change their minds with the activities at these interactive math sites, where math isn't so much a "subject" as a fascination field for exploration.

Cyberchase
Based on the award-winning TV show Cyberchase, a mathematics series for kids ages 8 to 12, this site demonstrates to kids that math is everywhere, that everyone can be good at math, and that math is fun! The site includes more than 40 interactive games; as well as printable activities, Web adventures, e-cards; and much more.

Interactive Mathematics Miscellany and Puzzles
The manifesto of Interactive Mathematics Miscellany and Puzzles, an educational Web site created, developed, and maintained by Alex Bogomolny, states that "Learning starts from wondering, and [a] purpose of this site is to serve as a resource for things, simple but curious, related to Mathematics." The sites more than 700 Java applets are sure to engage kids in exploring the mysteries of math. Topics include arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, probability, fractals, visual illusions, and much more. Best for students in middle school and above.

Math Advantage
The activities at this site were created to accompany specific chapters in Harcourts Math Advantage textbook series. The activities, however, relate to basic math concepts and can be used successfully with any Math program. Several activities are provided for each grade level -- K-8 -- and many, especially those for younger grades, are accompanied by audio directions, so reading skills are not necessary. Kids will enjoy practicing math skills with these fun activities.

Math Cats
At this site, designed "to promote open-ended and playful explorations of important math concepts," students will have so much fun, they might not even notice theyre learning math. The sites more than 100 activities include logic and math-story problems, probability experiments, arts and crafts, MicroWorld projects, and more. Students can explore shapes and patterns in the art gallery, design spirographs, manipulate animations, send in a story problems for publication and much more. The crafts section offers ideas and suggestions for students to explore geometry while making mobiles and ornaments Covered topics include addition, subtraction, place value, multiplication, division, conversions, measurement, estimation, probability, statistics, fractions, decimals, geometry, and more. An idea bank for parents and teachers offers even more lessons and activities submitted by teachers, and a free newsletter also is available.

Math Hunt
At this site, Scholastic provides 22 math-based Internet scavenger hunts designed to link math to science and social studies in an engaging and kid-friendly way. Studies choose a hunt from such topics as endangered animals, U.S. presidents, and sports, and are presented with a multiple-choice math problem to solve. A Hunt for the Answer button, takes them to a Web site where the information necessary to solve the problem can be found. Students are awarded points determined by the number of tries it takes them to solve the problem. These Math Hunts are great fun and great math.
