Site Review: National Museum of the American Indian

Site URL: NMAI.Si.edu

Content: A diverse and multifaceted cultural and educational enterprise, the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) cares for one of the world's most expansive collections of Native artifacts, including objects, photographs, archives and media covering the entire Western Hemisphere.

nmaiDesign: The site features a tiled design that is currently in vogue. Rather than going with a traditional “magazine” format, the NMAI site looks more like a smartphone or tablet page, with squares of content populating the space.

A traditional navigation bar across the top of the page provides users with easy access to various areas of the site.

Review: The National Museum of the American Indian is located in New York within the historic Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House, and visitors can experience the museum’s exhibitions, public programs, music and dance performances, films and symposia there. For those who cannot make the trek to New York, the museum’s online home is the next best thing.

Here, teachers and students can view artifacts and read about their history in the descriptions accompanying each online entry. Everything from physical artifacts to demonstrations of Native American sculpting techniques can be found here. The best part about the site is that it brings together the holdings of the museum’s two locations (New York and Washington, D.C.). Visitors are not held back because of geography and can enjoy each location’s holdings digitally.

Bottom Line: No lesson on Native Americans is complete without a visit (in-person or online) to The National Museum of the American Indian.
