Site Review: The Math League

Site URL:  TheMathLeague.com

Content:  This is the official Web site for the Math League, an annual mathematics tournament in which over a million students participate each year.

Design:  While the look of this site is quite dated, it does a great job of compiling content in a logical way. The main menu on the left sidebar is easy to navigate, and educators and students will find everything they need to participate in and practice for their area Math League Tournaments. The large collection of previous contest questions covers various levels of mathematics for grades 4-12.

math leagueReview:  Since its content is primarily focused around the Math League Tournaments (including registration), this site is a must for teams. The Math League’s goal is to challenge students with mathematical materials, and the materials here do just that. Noteworthy features are the collection of math contests from years past and sample contests by grade level, with solutions included for teams practicing for upcoming competitions. Some word problems and equations even feature fun illustrations and creative subject matter.

TheMathLeague.com also offers free iPad and iPhone apps to help generate student interest in math. These apps compile every grade 4-8 contest and their solutions from 1977 to 2010.

In addition to helping students prepare for competitions, this site can help any educator build kids’ math skills, along with their ability to handle high-pressure testing situations. TheMathLeague.com might even spur interest in starting a team, if your school doesn’t already have one.

Bottom Line: Whether you have students who are excited about math, or need to pump up their enthusiasm for the subject, this is the perfect place to get started.
