Site Review: LitPick

history educationSite URL: LitPick.com

Content:  Part online community, part book-dissemination engine, LitPick provides free electronic books to students in grades 4-12.

Design:  Because LitPick’s focus is literature, one might expect a stuffy-looking site full of boring, stark text. In fact, the opposite is true. The site has a light and fun appearance where vibrant colors abound, and the user’s digital reading experience is among the best for a browser-based platform.

LitpickReview:  LitPick receives courtesy copies of new young-adult books from publishers and authors, then makes these review copies available to student reviewers in a booklist. (The list can be viewed only after logging onto the site.) The student reviewers then offer their opinions of these titles in anonymous book reviews posted on the site, forming a lively and engaged online community that benefits all stakeholders. Members can also participate in LitPick threaded discussions with authors, publishers and publicists. By allowing young readers to share their opinions in a social community, the site aims to help preteens and teens develop a lifelong love of reading.

Bottom Line:  LitPick is not only an excellent resource for getting students excited about reading, but also a solid tool to reinforce writing skills.
