Site Review: JumpStart

history educationSite URL: JumpStart.com

Content: JumpStart provides a series of educational games that students can play online or on a variety of platforms and devices including Nintendo DS, Nintendo Wii and iPad.

Design: This site is gorgeous. Everything is bright and fun—colors and images pop without crowding the screen. The games themselves are fluid and fun, and finding them is easy, thanks to an intuitive navigation.

jump startReview: Launched in 2009, the site touts itself as the first learning game delivered in a browser with high-quality 3D graphics and advanced game play. Certified by kidSAFE, JumpStart offers a completely safe and secure online environment where students can interact, explore and learn. This makes it an excellent online destination for the 3- to 10-year-old demographic. Teachers also will appreciate the fact that language arts, math, science and more are covered here.

Students will undoubtedly be enthralled by the games’ technical chops. However, the real draw is the partnership between JumpStart and Dreamworks Animation. This means many of the games feature characters from popular recent children’s films such as How to Train Your Dragon and Madagascar.

Bottom Line: JumpStart is a win-win, featuring not only popular children’s characters, but also academically sound games in a secure environment.
