Site Review: Garden.org

Site URL: Garden.org

Content:  The National Gardening Association (NGA) is a nonprofit leader in plant-based education. The group’s stated mission is offering free, educational plant-based materials, grants and resources for students and educators.

Design:  One expects a certain level of color and imagery when logging onto a site dedicated to gardening, and the NGA’s site does not disappoint. Everything is swathed in green, and pictures of vegetation abound. The site is easily navigated, thanks to a useful navigation bar on the left side of the page and a set of quick links spaced across the top.

NGAReview: Garden.org helps teachers expand their knowledge of plant-based education and use school gardens effectively. There are numerous online resources here, including From Seed to Seed, a self-paced, plant-based science course for K-8 educators. NGA also offers seminars and workshops, and, in cooperation with universities and related nonprofits, acts as a clearinghouse for research on plant-based education.

NGA resources help children gain knowledge in science, literacy, social studies, nutrition, the environment and personal skills areas such as leadership, problem-solving and team building. By supporting thousands of school and community gardens nationwide, the group also aims to help children and adults establish links between plants, gardening, food and health.

Bottom Line:  When it comes to plant-based education, Garden.org has it covered.
