Site Review: Discovery Dinosaur Central

Site URL:  Discovery.com/Dinosaurs               Star Rating: 5

Content:  This site is Discovery’s home for everything related to dinosaurs.

Design:  Coming from the Discovery family of Web sites, the dinosaur site looks very much like its relatives. A main scroller promotes the newest and most interesting content. To the right of the scroller is a video player ready to broadcast clips on specific dinosaur-related topics. A nice feature of the player is a built-in playlist that allows users to quickly choose a video.

The rest of the homepage consists of a vertical string of article links. These links offer a small picture and synopsis along with each headline, giving users a solid grasp of the article’s content before clicking through.

Review:  Discovery is a huge name in education, so it’s no surprise that its dinosaur site is second-to-none. The video production is all first-class, and the written components are based in credible science. The site even includes dino-themed games and puzzles.

While not formatted into formal lesson plans, this content is perfect for student research and exploration. Not only does everything here have definite educational value, but it also reads in a child-friendly way.

Bottom Line:  Every lesson on dinosaurs should include a stop at this site.
