Site URL: Deere.com/WPS…

Content: From John Deere, this site offers videos, stories and activities designed to “not only entertain but inspire young minds to someday help transform, cultivate, enrich and harvest the land they’re learning to love.”

john DeereDesign: As with any site that comes from a major company, John Deere Kids is clean and easy to follow. The simple green-and-white color scheme draws users’ eyes to content without being garish. Likewise, the navigation is simple, meaning that even the youngest users can access all areas of the site with little help.

Review: This site is clearly promotional and designed to sell John Deere tractor toys. That said, there is enough genuine academic material here to warrant use in the classroom.

The character of Johnny Tractor appears in just about all sections of the site. Acting as students’ guide to content, he and his barnyard friends really shine in the learning area, where educators will find a wonderful collection of videos, activities and games to help students learn about farms, agriculture, tractors, construction machines and safety.

John Deere Kids skews very young and will only be useful for the early elementary grades. But for those who fall in that demographic, the site offers a terrific introduction to agriculture.

Bottom Line: There isn’t a ton of material, and a lot of it is promotional, but there are some quality classroom-ready materials here.
