Five Best MOOCs for Students and Teachers

Part of the trend toward increased technology use in the classroom, Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have become a popular way to teach students social skills, language arts, math and more. Educators also are using them to enhance their own professional development.

MOOCs grant users unlimited participation and open access. The courses come fully equipped with videos, readings, problems sets and even games. MOOCs also give students and teachers the opportunity for community building. 

Here are five great ones:

For Students

  1. WOWinSchool: The literature-based course was created as an English Language Arts elective. Students are required to make their own avatars and complete a set of quests to aid citizens of Azeroth. Students also are required to join a book club and discuss The Hobbit. Teachers will find the course, curriculum guide and other materials here
  2. How to Learn Math - For Students: This online course, sponsored by Stanford University, helps learners of all levels gain math skills. The course will correct any misconceptions students have about math and help them increase their potential for success. The MOOC consists of six lessons, as well as presentations from Dr. Jo Boaler and a team of undergraduates. In addition, users will find interviews, research ideas, visuals, films and explorations of math in nature, sports and design.  

For Teachers

  1. How to Develop Performance Tasks for the Common Core: The nine-week course focuses on building an educator's capacity to use, develop and implement curriculum-embedded assessments related to the Common Core. The course helps participants evaluate sample performance tasks and implement performance tasks in mathematics, language arts, history/social studies and science. 
  2. Re-Engineering your Science Curriculum: This hands-on workshop explores strategies teachers can use to integrate engineering practices into their middle- and high-school science classes. The course will compare and contrast research methods employed by scientists and engineers and demonstrate how teachers can implement and create lessons to aid their students in understanding engineering. The principles include learning to: design with constraints, analyze and interpret data, construct models and conduct iterative tests. 
  3. Effective Classroom Interactions - Supporting Young Children's Development: The course helps teachers support their students emotionally as well as academically. The MOOC includes access to a number of video lectures, in-video quizzes and Test Your Knowledge quizzes. There are also optional weekly homework assignments.
