Kindle Fire App Review: Words with Friends

App Name:  Words with Friends

Cost:  Free (ad-free version also available for $2.99)

Words With FriendsWhat does it promise?  Words with Friends is a Scrabble™-like application that allows users to create words from the seven letters they are dealt. It offers a vocabulary game that is part strategy and part word knowledge.

Does it deliver?  Yes. This game is a prime example of how something as simple as word building can be a great skill enhancer. As in Scrabble™, players must build off of the other words on the board. It can be played with a random opponent, an opponent whom the player selects or a local player on the same Kindle Fire. Purchasing the paid version is recommended; users have voiced many complaints about the intrusiveness of the ads in the free version.

Can I use it in my classroom?  Yes, as an educational filler activity. You can also use it to support vocabulary building.

All apps can be found on Amazon.com or in the Android Marketplace.
