iPad App Review: PBS Kids Video

App Name:  PBS Kids Video (free)

Cost:  Free

What does it promise?  The PBS Kids Video app promises to extend PBS' mission to deliver curriculum-based entertainment across all platforms. The app also was designed so kids could stay current on various PBS children's shows. This is useful, since some of the programs have running storylines, and others have sequential educational components where seeing episodes in order is required.

Does it deliver?  The app, which requires Wi-Fi or 3G access, offers a tremendous amount of content from everything from “Sesame Street”to “Arthur”(the aardvark, not the Dudley Moore character). Oddly, the app does not offer full shows, which seems contrary to its stated goal of keeping kids current. Still, there are hundreds of clips available, and parents could do a lot worse if they're letting their child use an iPad to watch TV.

Can I use it in my classroom?  Many of the clips, which are usually around one minute long, actually address specific educational topics (like brushing your teeth or being nice to kids who are different). For this reason, teachers might want to play them in a classroom setting by hooking an iPad up to a TV monitor. Although limited by the fact that most content is for the kindergarten level or younger, a few well-chosen clips could effectively reinforce lessons by using characters with which young kids are familiar.

All apps can be found in the iPad apps store in the education category.
