Five Great Android Apps for the Classroom

Apple may have the lion’s share of the education market when it comes to mobile apps, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some terrific classroom apps being developed for other devices. Here are five apps that have generated a fair amount of attention for their ability to turn any Android device into a classroom-ready learning tool.

Super Why

Students build reading power with this collection of four Super Why interactive literacy games from PBS Kids. They can play along with each of the four main characters from the TV series (Alpha Pig, Princess Presto, Wonder Red and Super Why) while practicing rhyming, spelling, writing and reading.

Star Chart

Students can now have a virtual planetarium in their pockets. They can look through the eyes of their Android devices to open a virtual window into the whole visible universe. All they have to do is point their Android device at the sky, and Star Chart will tell them exactly what they’re viewing.

Using state-of-the-art GPS technology, an accurate 3D universe and all of the latest high-tech functionality, Star Chart calculates—in real time—the current location of every star and planet visible from Earth. The app shows users precisely where they are even in broad daylight, so classroom use is easy.

Flashcards Deluxe

This is an easy-to-use, yet powerful and full-featured flashcard app that teachers and students can use to study just about anything. The app was very popular and highly rated on iOS and is now available on Android. Users can create flashcards either on their computers or directly within the app. If they don’t want to make their own, they can browse and download flashcards from Quizlet.com and Cram.com.

math helper

Math Helper

This universal assistant helps students solve mathematical tasks, showing the answer as well as a detailed solution. This is not for simple math; rather, it is meant to be used in advanced middle- and high-school courses. Derivatives, limits, geometric shapes, the task of statistics, matrices, systems of equations and vectors are all covered here.

My Class Schedule

Tremendous for middle- and high-schoolers, My Class Schedule keeps students’ lives organized. This app will not only keep students informed about upcoming classes, but also remind them of exams and unfinished homework. The main feature of this app is its timetable, which shows the schedule for any particular day or week. Additionally, there are many other helpful features, including a grade overview with average grades and the ability to automatically mute the device during class.

All of the above apps can be found at the GooglePlay app shop.
