App Review: GoSkyWatch Planetarium

App Name: GoSkyWatch Planetarium

Cost: Free

What does it promise?: GoSkyWatch Planetarium promises users the ability to have their own personal telescope without having to go out to buy one. It offers away to explore the planets, stars, constellations and all other aspects of the vast universe that we live in. The app promises to be easy to use, a full 180 display and features such as identify and find.

Does it deliver?: This app does in fact do what it promises to do free of charge. The find and identify tools are clearly identifiable and easy to use. Users can search the Solar System, Constellations, Deep Sky, Stars and Star Light. Simply click on the planet you want and you are open to a world of information ranging from the diameter, distance or orbital period of a planet, to the type of grouping associated with constellations. The app is truly remarkable as it is so easy to navigate making it easy to pinpoint whatever information is necessary to the student.

Can I use it in the classroom?: While the app is perfectly suitable for the classroom it comes with the disclaimer that it should be used in grades 6-12. The navigation may seem simple to older students and the statistics would better match material taught in upper grade levels. It will prove to be very useful to students not only as a tool in the classroom, but also a great study guide at home.
