iPad App Review: JA (Junior Achievement) Build Your Future

App Name:  JA (Junior Achievement) Build Your Future

Cost:  Free

What does it promise? This comprehensive app allows students to explore over 100 careers; determine what levels of education are required; learn about potential income; and calculate the cost of education, including comparing the cost of private universities and in-state and out-of-state public universities.

build your futureDoes it deliver? It sure does. It’s one thing to provide information about schools and jobs, but JA Build Your Future goes above and beyond with features that allow students to adjust the level of money they and their parents will contribute, and combine that with student loans they may need to secure. At the end of the exercise, teens are given a Return on Investment (ROI) score between 1 and 5. A score of 1 means it will be difficult to pay off the debt accrued based on future income; a score of 5 means they should have no problem paying off debt with estimated future income.

Can I use it in my classroom? It’s never too early for students to begin thinking about career options, and JA Build Your Future is a great way for teachers to get that ball rolling. Thanks to its ROI feature, the app is also a pretty useful tool for high school math classes.

All apps can be found in the iPad apps store under education.
