App Name: Click and Learn
Cost: Free
What does it promise? Students can interactively explore topics in biology with Click and Learn. Each module features supporting videos and animations (Internet connection required). Additionally, students can explore topics in evolution, neurobiology, infectious diseases and bioinformatics.
Does it deliver? The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), a nonprofit medical research organization and one of the nation’s largest philanthropies, produced this app. HHMI plays a powerful role in advancing biomedical research and science education and brings that research to an app that is literally second-to-none for the money. Interested in symbiotic relationships in nature? This app covers it. How about biological vectors? That’s covered, too. Unlike some apps’ material, Click and Learn content can serve as a lesson all by itself.
The most recent version of Click and Learn allows users to save video content to their devices so that it can be played without an Internet connection. Teachers can prep for a lesson the night before and run all of the app’s features without fussing with a WiFi connection.
Can I use it in my classroom? Given that this app costs literally nothing, every biology teacher in America should have this on an iPad.
