Share

App Name: Pocket Oxford American Dictionary & Thesaurus

Cost:  $4.99

What does it promise? The Pocket Oxford American Dictionary & Thesaurus is the ideal, all-in-one reference, with a dictionary and a thesaurus combined in a single handy, integrated application. A word's meanings, synonyms and antonyms are given in the same entry, allowing the user access to all this information at a glance.

Does it deliver? The text is fully updated with the latest lexical content, informed by Oxford's extensive language research program including the Oxford English Corpus. The Corpus is a unique electronic database of more than two billion words that allows the app to offer the fullest, most accurate picture of the English language today. Hundreds of new words cover computing, ecology, technology and many other subjects.

Other features of the app that impress are:

  • More than 100,000 entries, synonyms and senses;
  • A new, integrated design that’s accessible, clear and easy to use;
  • Sounds-like (fuzzy search) to help find those difficult-to-spell words.
  • Offline access, making wireless connection unnecessary;
  • Integrated dictionary and thesaurus texts; and
  • Helpful in-text features and extra reference information.

Can I use it in my classroom? The app is perfect for classrooms of any level. It works well as a supplement to your current dictionary and thesaurus or as a next-level replacement.
