App Review: SpellingCity

App Name: SpellingCity

Cost: Free

What does it promise?: The SpellingCity App promises a fun way to learn spelling and vocabulary words for grades K-12. The app also promises 10 of the most popular word lists along with 10 fun and popular games to match.

Does it deliver?: Yes. The SpellingCity app is indeed quite fun to use. It’s a very age diverse app that enables it to be used by young children as well as older students who are trying to prepare for the SAT’s. In fact, the SAT Words game is a fun way for high school students to practice, though some may find it a little childish for their age. Other games include Spelling TestMe, HangMouse, Missing Letter, Word Scramble and Test-N-Teach. HangMouse is one of the more enjoyable games. The interactive aspect of HangMouse and the other nine games available on SpellingCity is what makes this app a fun experience that actually teaches.

Can I use it in the Classroom?: Yes. SpellingCity can be used in the classroom because the company has fitted it with a feature that allows you to create your own word list. Teachers can use this feature to create a list of their weekly spelling or vocabulary words and use the games on the app as a study/teaching tool for kids. The app might not be the best choice for grades above middle school but we highly recommend it.
