Join The Read In! On April 24!

Excitement is building as the day of The Read In! nears. On April 24, more than 200,000 students around the world will chat "live" with their favorite book authors and illustrators! Learn how you can join the fun in Education World's feature story this week, Join "The Read In!" on April 24!

And, while you're at it, check out some great ideas for making the day of The Read In! (or any day) a day to remember! Teachers who took part in last year's Read In! share their favorite reading themes and activities for use across the grades. See this week's LESSON PLANNING story, Reading Activities for "Read-In!" Day.

But that's not all! This week's reading-themed issue is full of stories. Be sure to read:

  • Get to Know Your Favorite Authors -- On the Internet!
From the bright cheer of picture-book-writer Eric Carle's home page to the direct approach of Aaron Shepard's, authors' pages teem with biographical information, bibliographies, information about specific books, and even, in many cases, activities geared to fun and learning.
  • Reading and Writing at Home Improves Skills!
A recent NCES study verifies what most teachers and parents know: Students who read and write more at home do better on tests of reading and writing ability. Included: Activities to get students reading and writing at home!
  • "Simple Things You Can Do to Help All Children Read Well..."
"Simple Things You Can Do to Help All Children Read Well and Independently by the End of Third Grade" is a new booklet from the U.S. Department of Education. The booklet provides ideas for involving community groups, local companies and universities, the media, and others in achieving your school's reading goals.
