Community Service in Action

The holiday season is a time when many school children are actively involved in community service projects. That's why we chose "community service" as the theme of this week's edition of Education World.

"Community service" is a term with many definitions. So what is the true meaning of community service? This week, we give readers a working definition in one of our CURRICULUM stories, Is Community Service a Waste of Time? In addition, this week we offer a special lesson plan. Involve your students in collecting 168 pennies -- one penny for each victim of the bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. This story includes links to a conflict resolution teaching kit produced by the Oklahoma City National Memorial Foundation. This time of year is a perfect time to reflect on what schools can give back to their communities. But true "community service" is not just a December activity. It is an ongoing opportunity.
