Each of the 51 printable Mystery State work sheets presents five clues to the identity of one of the 50 U.S. states or the District of Columbia (Washington, D.C.). Students use the clues to help them identify that place.

Clue 1: A sculpture of two whale tails sticking up out of the ground can be seen in this state, which shares no borders with an ocean.

Clue 2: Before joining the union, this state was an independent republic from 1777 to 1791.

Clue 3: This state is the top producer of maple syrup in the United States.

Clue 4: The Green Mountains dominate the landscape in this state.

Clue 5: The capital of this state, Montpelier, has the smallest population of any state capital.
