Song Lyrics and Poetry Terms: Katy Perry's "Firework"

EducationWorld is pleased to share this high-interest lesson plan created by educator Tracee Orman. The lesson also appears on TeachersPayTeachers.

Take 6th-12th-grade students' interest in popular music and focus that energy to teach about common poetry devices and terms. Kids will love referencing pop artist Katy Perry while they learn about imagery devices such as metaphors, similes, personification, hyperbole; sound devices such as alliteration, assonance, consonance, onomatopoeia, rhyme; and rhetorical devices such as anaphora and epistrophe. For added fun, play the song in class while students work.
