LESSON PLANNING ARTICLE

math graphicMath Fun: Volume 1

Share

You may have to remind students that they're learning math after they've done one of these five lessons from Education World. The lessons are "invisible" because kids have so much fun they don't realize they are actually doing math! Included: Students compare the cost of a gallon of gasoline to a gallon of other liquids, practice basic math by playing Fact-O, solve the Weekly Math Challenge, and impress adults with their mathematical dexterity!

Teacher-Created Math Lessons

The following lessons were created by teachers for teachers. They all come from the Education World Teacher-Submitted Lesson Plan archive.

* Ladybug Math
* Telling Time
* Counting with Marshmallows and Licorice
* Lighting the Perimeter
* Twenty-Five: A Math Card Game
* Area and Perimeter
* Two-Dimensional Geometric Shapes
* Web Adventure -- Oakland to Chicago Flight

This week, Education World provides five fun lessons for reinforcing students' math skills. Click each of the five lesson headlines below for a complete teaching resource. (Approximate grades levels appear in parentheses.)

And You Thought Gasoline Was Expensive!
A chart comparing the cost of a gallon of gasoline to the cost of gallons of other liquids -- mouthwash, house paint, fruit juice, and white-out, for example -- might make the cost of gas seem manageable after all. (Grades 3-12)

Fact-O!
The Fact-O game combines math fact practice with a game of chance and skill. Game sheet included. (Grades K-12)

Math Magic
Students impress others with their ability as they figure out a person's age with some simple math calculations. Included: Two math puzzles to exercise math computation skills! (Grades 3-12)

Create a Graph Online
A kid-friendly online graph-making tool allows students to create colorful bar, line, or pie graphs. This lesson can be easily adapted for use with any teaching unit. (Grades PreK-12)

Weekly Math Challenge
Turn a corner of your classroom into a Weekly Math Challenge center. Students earn special rewards for solving math challenges. Included: Weekly Math Challenge sources plus reward ideas. (Grades 3-12)
