Lesson Highlights of 2011

This year EducationWorld took lesson plans in a new direction, basing them on engaging topics including pop culture, current events and surprising facts from history. We also created a new feature, the Lesson Plan Booster, designed to spark student discussion at the upper grade levels.

Here are a few of our favorites from a variety of subject areas:

Lesson Plan Booster: Is Truth Stranger Than Fiction?
Students discuss how real-life experiences help an author shape a fictional character, and then they apply these techniques to their own writing.

Harry Potter-Inspired Learning Activity:  Design a Wizard Sports Team
In this lesson for grades K-2, students use creativity, critical thinking and language skills to develop a new sports team.

Lesson Plan Booster: How Can Students Help a Bullied Peer?
This discussion guide helps students consider the impact of bullying on the school as a whole, as well as on the bullied student who does not receive help.

Creepy-Crawly: A Life Science Lesson Plan
With this eye-popping science lesson plan, students learn that unusual behaviors can help organisms survive.

Cross-Cultural Dialogue Writing: Guy Fawkes’ Gunpowder Plot
Students blend language arts, history and cultural awareness with a dialogue-writing lesson that celebrates Guy Fawkes Night, a November holiday in the United Kingdom.

Lesson Plan Booster: Does Vengeance Do More Harm Than Good?
With this provocative conversation starter, kids consider the American reaction to the death of Osama bin Laden, and the effects of vengeance.

Be the Boss: A Lesson on Managing Feelings
A charming K-6 lesson creates a safe environment in which students can identify and share their feelings.

Lesson Plan: Rewriting History
Kids write a news story about widely believed inaccuracies within the stories of American historical figures.
