Japan Relief Efforts Get Creative Twist

Across the country, students have mobilized to help relief efforts in Japan. Kids have gotten creative and have used both academic and artistic skills in order to raise funds. Below are highlights from a few featured schools. Has your school found a creative way to help Japan? Share your ideas in order to help other schools join the effort.

 

  • In Laguna Niguel, CA, students at George White Elementary School raised money for the American Red Cross' relief efforts in Japan by soliciting donations before school. For donations of $5 or more, students gave away bracelets they had made. – OC Register.com
  • At Mullan Trail Elementary School in Post Falls, ID, students did math problems to help Japan. The school uses Apangea Learning, a supplemental online math program that allows students to earn points by completing problems. Students donated their points to assist the Red Cross instead of redeeming them for prizes. – CDA Press.com
  • At Fairfield Warde High School in Fairfield, CT, the student "Interact Club" changed the name of its annual benefit concert to "Harmony for Japan." Proceeds from the event will be sent to Japan through the American Red Cross Foundation. – Fairfield Citizen
  • At Goshen Middle School in Goshen, OH, students got crafty in order to help earthquake and tsunami victims in Japan. Kids came up with the idea of making paper origami cranes and collecting pledges based on the number of cranes they made. Some students wrote the names of Japanese towns and cities on the cranes before hanging them in the hallways.  - Cincinnati.com

Deciding where to donate the finds students raise? Below are organizations that are working on relief and recovery efforts in Japan.

AMERICAN RED CROSS: Supports and advises the Japanese Red Cross, which continues to assist the government in its response.

GLOBALGIVING: Distributes donations to organizations providing relief and emergency services to victims of the earthquake and tsunami.

SAVE THE CHILDREN:  Assists with longer-term recovery for children affected by Japan's earthquake and tsunami.

SALVATION ARMY: Provides emergency assistance to those in need.

AMERICARES: Provides medicines and supplies to hospitals, shelters and health responders. 

INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL CORPS: Delivers supplies, assesses needs, and identifies communities not yet been reached.

SHELTERBOX: Delivers boxes of aid to those most in need. Boxes include tents, cookers, blankets and other survival items.
