Math Game: Hungry Frog

Thanks to its partnership with publisher Eye on Education, EducationWorld is pleased to present the following math activity from Math Intervention: Building Number Power with Formative Assessments, Differentiation, and Games (Grades PreK-2 and Grades 3-5).

This game from Jennifer Taylor-Cox can be used for students in PreK-5 to teach and reinforce the concepts of one-to-one correspondence and subtraction.

Materials

Directions

  1. Players place one counter on each fly on the game board.
  2. The first player rolls both dice and decides which number she wants to use to represent how many flies Hungry Frog will eat. The player tells a number story about Hungry Frog eating flies, models the take away subtraction by taking away counters, and states the subtraction equation. For example, there are 40 flies. Hungry Frog eats three. Now there are 37 flies left, 40 – 3 = 37.
  3. The next player rolls the dice and chooses one of the numbers to be the subtrahend. The player tells the new subtraction story and states the equation. For example, 37 – 5 = 32.
  4. Players take turns rolling the dice, choosing a subtrahend, telling and modeling the associated number story, and stating the equation.
  5. The winner is the player who has Hungry Frog eat the last fly. An exact number must be rolled to win.

Content Differentiation

  • Moving Back: Use half of the game board and start with 20 flies.
  • Moving Forward: Use mental math to play this game without the counters or the game board. Tell different kinds of number stories.
