Eight Activities for Grandparents Day

Need classroom activities for your school's Grandparents Day, or fun projects that students can take home to do with their grandparents or other special relatives? Grandparents and grandkids can do arts and crafts, cook together, work outdoors, play games and more. Here are eight great Grandparents Day activities.

  1. Cook Together: Invite grandchildren into the kitchen to cook or bake a special recipe, whether it is a special desert or a casserole. Children will learn a family recipe, work on a skill and have fun at the same time. (In the classroom, try making a simple fruit salad or similar dish.)
  2. Learn Something New: Spend the class period (or a weekend day) learning a new skill, whether it is building a wind-powered boat, designing t-shirts or making a robot. Check out these sites for easy instructions and ideas: Instructables.com, Monkeysee.com and HowStuffWorks.com.
  3. Make a Memory Box: Go through family photos, souvenirs and memorabilia and collect them in a box. Make it a tradition and keep adding different memories to the box. Spend each Grandparents Day going through the memory box.
  4. Make a Photo Album: Get some art supplies, collect family photographs and make a family photo album. (Have students bring photos to school and work on the album with their special relatives.) Create something you can keep and add to forever.
  5. Have a Sleepover: Make popcorn, rent a movie and enjoy each other's company, or use one of Grandparents.com's 25 great sleepover activities for the big day.
  6. Plant a Garden: There is nothing more relaxing than getting outdoors, so this Grandparents Day, plant a flower or vegetable garden. (In the classroom, have grandparents and grandkids plant seeds in cups or mini pots.) Creating something beautiful helps children develop a sense of accomplishment.
  7. Send a Hug: If grandparents live far away, send them a creative "hug" in the mail. This is a great activity for the classroom. Have students trace their hands, cut them out and write messages on the hug.
  8. Arts and Crafts: Find plenty of arts and crafts activities to share with students or have them complete in the classroom. These projects make great gifts for students to give to their grandparents or special relatives.
