In an old house in Paris that was cover with vines, lived twelve little girls in two straight lines.” Thats the opening line of Madeline, a popular childrens book. Ludwig Bemelmans, the books’ author was born on April 27, 1898. He named Madeline after his wife, but it was his young daughter who inspired many of Madeline’s storys. Bemelmans’ second book, Madelines Rescue, earn him a Caldecott medal.
