Lesson Plan

This activity can be used as a comprehension activity in grades 4 and up. Invite student to read the story about The San Francisco Earthquake of 1906.

You might
  • photocopy the story so each student has a copy.
  • copy the story onto a transparency and use an overhead projector to display it for students to read on their own or together.
  • post a hard copy of the story in a learning center and let students cycle into the center during the week to complete the comprehension activity.
After reading story about The San Francisco Earthquake of 1906, students should complete the story about The San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 comprehension activity. (You might consider saving paper by presenting this follow-up activity as a transparency; let students write down the answers rather than circle them.)

At the upper grades you might even use this activity as a listening activity. Hand out a copy of the story about The San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 comprehension activity. Let students read through it so they know the important information for which they will need to listen. Then tell them you are going to read aloud twice, slowly, a story about The San Francisco Earthquake of 1906. They can answer the questions as they listen or after you have finished reading it aloud. You might read it through a third time so they can "polish up" their work.
