Brief Description

Create a classroom fractions competition using a Web-based game.

Objectives

Students

  • use an online tool to practice/reinforce a wide variety of skills related to fractions.
  • work cooperatively as a team.

Keywords

fractions, tech, online, tool, rename, renaming, whole numbers

Materials Needed

  • Internet access to the online Web tool VisualFractions
  • a computer hooked up to a projector or four or five computer stations (Note: This activity also can be adapted for small groups of students in the one-computer classroom.)

Lesson Plan

In this activity, teams of students will compete for the best score in a variety of activities related to fractions. They will use the Web-based tool VisualFractions, which can be used to reinforce almost any fraction-related skill:

  • identifying fractions
  • renaming fractions
  • comparing fractions
  • adding fractions
  • subtracting fractions
  • multiplying fractions
  • dividing fractions
Before introducing this easy-to-use tool to students, familiarize yourself with how it works. Choose the skill you want to reinforce from the list above and check out the online VisualFractions game related to it.
Note: This activity is a reinforcement activity. It should be done after students have been introduced to, and practiced, the skill.

You can set up a classroom competition using VisualFractions in a wide variety of ways. Two possibilities include:

  • Arrange students into teams of four. Project the VisualFractions Web site on a large screen and let teams take turns solving fraction problems posed on the site. (You might do a couple "practice problems" before beginning the competition; that way, students will have a clear idea of how the site operates.) Have a scorekeeper track the number of problems solved correctly by each team.
  • Arrange students into teams of four. Assign each team to a computer station and have them solve problems. No need for a scorekeeper because at the end of a set amount time you can compare the scores on each team's computer to determine the classroom champion.

VisualFractions is a tool your students will want to use over and over again. You might add this online resource to your list of classroom-approved "free-time computer resources." It is also a good tool for helping students who might be having difficulty grasping the concept of fractions.

Assessment

Create an after-the-game assessment tool in which students work on their own to solve appropriate problems using fractions.
