Lesson Plan

Preparation

Die-cut the materials for student use prior to the lesson.

Lesson

  1. Fold a 12" square sheet of lightweight or typing paper into three triangles (see above).
  2. Slide the closed point of the folded triangle (the center point if the paper is opened) down the center of the Boy or Girl Figure, keeping folded edges inside the cutting rule. Extend the closed point past the cutting edge of the Figure and then die-cut (see right).
  3. Unfold to see the Boy or Girl Figure wreath (see below).
  4. Die-cut the Boy and Girl hair using black, brown or yellow paper. Students may use colored pens or crayons to decorate.
  5. Die-cut the Boy or Girl Figure, Dress and Shoes and the Boy or Girl Figure, Shirt, Pants and Shoes from multiple colors.
  6. Decorate clothing to indicate careers (e.g., firefighter, police officer) by using crayons, colored pencils, construction paper, felt, fabric, beads or buttons. Attach the Boy or Girl hair for personalized Figures.
  7. Adhere the wreath to the lower half of a 12" x 18" poster board. Add the title "Community Helpers."
  8. Label each Figure on the wreath with the corresponding job title (see image at the top of this lesson).

Assessment

Students reflect on their group performance to appreciate the benefits and challenges of working together as a classroom community. Younger students can choose their favorite community helper or select from a given list. Second language learners can learn the English words for careers through this project. At the end of the lesson, the teacher may ask groups to present their projects and explain why certain colors, materials or symbols were chosen.
