Eight Books for Veterans Day

Veterans Day is around the corner, and schools around the nation will remember those who put their lives on the line for the freedom of others.

Students in elementary school, and even early middle school, may not truly understand the meaning behind Veterans Day, but books can help teachers with that. Education World has curated a list of eight books teachers can use in the classroom.

  1. Veterans: Heroes in Our Neighborhood by Valerie Pfundstein: In this book, Amazon says, "an engaging rhyming picture book for readers of all ages that fosters mindfulness of and appreciation for the brave service men and women who are also our family, friends, and neighbors. These are the men and women who bravely served our great country and now humbly serve in our communities."
  2. What is Veterans Day? by Elaine Landau: In What is Veterans Day? Amazon says, "This easy-to-read book is perfect for nonfiction reading or read-aloud. Enjoy a hands-on activity and make a thank-you poster for the veterans in your community!"
  3. Veterans Day by Jacqueline S. Cotton: This book, "explains the history of Veterans Day and why it is observed, and suggests ways of honoring veterans on this special day, such as flying the flag, attending parades, buying poppies, and visiting hospitals," says Amazon.
  4. Hero Dad by Melinda Hardin: In this book, children can read a story about "a boy who compares his father, a U.S. soldier, to a superhero," Amazon says.
  5. Granddad Bud: A Veterans Day Story by Sharon Ferry: This story follows when "a young boy's great-grandfather comes to his school to talk about Veterans Day, the boy is unsure what to expect. Why exactly do we celebrate Veterans Day - and will his classmates be interested in what Granddad Bud has to say?"
  6. H is for Honor: A Military Family Alphabet by Devin Scillian: Amazon says, "written by the son of a career officer, this book explores the branches of the Armed Services and speaks from the heart about the honor, privileges and sacrifices of military families everywhere. Children will discover why drill sergeants have to be so tough, what it means to be patriotic and why we need Special Forces such as the Navy SEALS, the Green Berets and the Army Rangers."
  7. Pepper's Purple Heart: A Veterans Day Story by Heather French Henry: In Pepper's Purple Heart, Amazon says, "Claire and Robbie learn why we honor veterans on Veterans Day. Claire also learns responsibility after her neighbor rescues her puppy, Pepper."
  8. The Wall by Eve Bunting: This book, Amazon says, is about "a young boy and his father visit the Vietnam Veterans Memorial."
